Abstract
560,019. Pressure gauges. JOHNSON, C. L. Oct. 3, 1941, No. 12798. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1940. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] Relates to angle of attack indicators for aircraft and comprises air foil means having two ports with their axes at a vertical angle with each other, measuring devices responsive to air pressures at said ports, a device for indicating angle of attack, and means for combining the movements of said measuring devices to cause said indicating device to operate in response to the ratio of the air pressures applied at said ports. The axis of one port is preferably parallel to the thrust axis of the aircraft, and the angle between the ports is between 25 degrees and 65 degrees; preferably 45 degrees; the ports may be in the leading edge of the main wing of the aircraft, but are preferably inseparate air foils, one of which is the usual' Pitot-static tube. In Fig. 3, the air pressures at; the ports act through ducts 19, 22, on diaphragms 25, 41, restrained by leaf springs 26, 42, and adjustable stops 27,. 43, so that their movements are proportional to the logarithms of the pressures. The diaphragm 25 rocks a bell crank lever 30 carrying a pivotedstrip 32 engaged on one side by an adjustable stop 46 on a bell crank lever 39 rocked by the diaphragm 41, and on the other side by a lever 33 connected through, gearing 35,. 36 to an indicating pointer 24 constrained by a spring 39<1>. When the shape of the part containing the inclined port, or the inclination of such port, results in negative pressures in the duct 22, the diaphragm 25 is mounted so as to act on the bell crank lever 30 in the opposite direction. A pressure head for connection to duct 22 may comprise a body 47, Figs. 5 and 6, with a mounting fin 48 at the rear and two parts 49, 50, inclined preferably at 45 degrees to the axis of the head. A further form of pressure head comprises a body 47<1>, Fig. 9, with inclined ports 49<1> leading to duct 22, a dynamic pressure port 51 communicating with duct 19, and electric heating means 52.
