[Class 140] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXIIII] Laminated wooden blocks or articles having portions of higher density than other portions are made by compressing and bonding together with the aid of adhesive a pile of wood veneers or laminae which are interleaved with additional layers of paper, cardboard, pulp or similar material containing finely divided fibres at the place or places where a higher density is required. The dimensions of the additional layers may be varied to obtain a gradual transition beween the portions of high and low density. The additional layers may be of paper, cardboard or pulp, made from wood, straw or other vegetable fibres or from textile fibres, may be laminated, comprising sheets of the same or different materials united by adhesive, or may comprise a film of thermo-setting or thermoplastic adhesive containing a fibrous filler. Further laminae of paper, pulp &c. extending the whole width and length of the block may also be incorporated. The adhesive may be incorporated in the paper, pulp &c. layers during the paper making process, may be in the form of solid dry films, or may be sprayed or brushed on to the laminae in liquid form. Airscrew blades may be made with increased density at the root, centre, tip, or edges or having a varying density across the width of the blade. Curved or shaped articles including airscrew blades may be produced by moulding the assembled laminations between dies. Specifications 463,837 and 498,674, [both in Group XXXIII], are referred to.
