[Class 140] [Also in Group XIII] A structural material comprises at least one layer made from two sheet-like elements 1 each moulded into the form of a number of openmouthed cavities 4 united by webs 5, the two elements mating with one another and being so united that the registering cavities together form a number of wholly closed air cells. A plane sheet 3 may be secured to one or both faces of the product. A thin sheet of material with openings so that the registering cavities communicate may be inserted between the two elements ; or a reinforcement of metal gauze or wire may be inserted. The sheets may be of paper or like pulp impregnated with a natural or hardenable synthetic resin, or mouldable cellulose derivative of the thermo-plastic type. Rubber, or compositions of coumarone or indene resins and rubber is suitable, and the product may be rigid or soft and resilient. The material may be used for parts of aircraft, the superstructure of motor launches, and where buoyancy is required.
