[Class 95] An apparatus for cleaning the end surfaces of elongated articles such as containers or cans, e.g. for wiping excess coating material from the neck ends of internally coated containers, comprises a conveyer wherein the articles are supported in non-upright position, and a cleaning apron adjacent the path of movement of the articles having a surface upon which the end surfaces of the articles are wiped and cleaned, said apron being shifted to present fresh surfaces to successive articles. Waxcoated containers 10 leave a draining chamber 13, and are carried on conveyers 12, 15 past a heated surface 22 which removes any drops of wax which may be present on the necks of the containers. The containers, in a horizontal position, then roll down a chute 20 into the wiping machine, where they are rolled along tracks 26 by endless belts 32, 33. During this, movement the container ends are wiped by a driven fabric sheet or apron 50, which may be fed continuously or intermittently, and which passes a shaped guide bar 53, and which may pass through a tank of a cleaning liquid, e.g. a wax solvent. In the modification shown in Fig. 9, the containers 110 are carried by cradles 111 through the wiping machine, each container having an aligned plunger assembly 151 moving, along tracks 153, 154, in unison therewith. The wiping apron 178<SP>1</SP> is slowly led from the supply roll 178, over rolls 182, 182<SP>1</SP>, to the rewindina roll 197. As the containers and plunger assemblies move jointly across the apron, on opposite sides thereof, the cam rail 232 projects the plungers forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 11, so that the neck is wiped. In this modification, rotation of the containers is unnecessary.
