Abstract

558,313. Aircraft. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Sept. 28, 1942, No. 13619. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1941. [Class 4] The metal skin of an aircraft wing, fuselage or flooring is secured to the framework by interposing a layer of rubber composition and bonding it to the skin and framework by vulcanizing. A wing is described in which ribbed aluminium or aluminium alloy plates 7 are secured to flanges 9 of ribs 8 so as to present large areas of contact with sheets 11 of rubber composition interposed between the plates 7 and outer skin 10. The plates 7 and skin 10 in contact with the sheets 11 are previously coated with an adhesive known under the Registered Trade Mark "Ty-ply" comprising essentially a rubber hydrochloride, dibutyl pthalate and sulphur. The sheets 11 are of uncured rubber composition such as one containing 36.44 per cent rubber, 54 per cent carbon black, 3 per cent zinc oxide, 4.75 per cent softener, 0.37 per cent accelerator, 0.25 per cent antioxidant and 1.19 per cent sulphur. The sheets are 0.001 to 0.05 of an inch thick. The parts are placed in a moulding press and the layers subjected to vulcanisation. Xylene may be used for softening the 'Ty-ply" if it has become too dry. Neoprene or other synthetic rubber may be used instead of natural rubber.
