Abstract

557,278. Grinding lenses &c. CHAMPION, A. G. July 20, 1942, No. 10093. [Class 60] A machine for simultaneously grinding the edges of a number of lenses or similar forms comprises a horizontal, rotary, vertically reciprocated disc around which are rotary chucks for the lenses, the chucks being carried by pairs of arms pivoted about the axes of vertical spindles from which the chucks are driven and themselves driven from horizontal shafts at each side of the apparatus ; the arms are moved inwards by springs to bring the lenses into contact with the disc limiting stops being provided ; means are provided for grinding non-circular lenses. The grinding disc 20, Fig. 3, is carried by a vertical spindle 12 rotated by bevel gear from a shaft 25 driven by a pulley. The spindle drives a horizontal shaft 31 to which is geared a second horizontal shaft 41 and these shafts drive vertical shafts 66 disposed symmetrically round the disc 20. The shafts 60 carry the pairs of pivotal arms 67 carrying the chucks 73 which are driven by the engagement of gears 70 thereon with gears 71, Fig. 2, on the shafts 60. The arms 67 are urged inwardly by springs 76, adjustable stops 80 being provided. A further shaft 45 is driven from the horizontal shaft 41 and is provided with a cam 48 operating a lever 50 by which a vertical reciprocation is given to the disc. By arranging cams on the clutch shafts for engagement with adjustable stops lenses of the same shape as the cams can be ground. The disc is kept wet by sponges 87 fed by pipes 86 from a common source.
