Abstract
555,671. Hydraulic couplings. CLEVELAND, F. J. (Hydraulic Brake Co.). Dec. 23, 1941, No. 16587. [Class 69 (ii)] In a hydraulic coupling of the fluid flywheel type comprising an impeller 78 with vanes 94 and a tutbine 100 having three sets of vanes 134, 146, 154, and also rectifying vanes 142, 152, and. reaction-vanes 174, 198, the vanes work in a torus 126 which is so designed that the fluid circuit is of uniform annular cross-sectional area so that there is a uniform fluid flow. The torus is built up from a radial section which has a central line in the form of an ellipse, and the actual form is determined on the principle that the width of the circuit at all points in radial section is inversely proportional to the distance from the centre of rotation of the driving- shaft 72 and driven shaft 102, and allowance is. made for the volumetric displacement of the vanes disposed within the passage. The driving- shaft 72 is driven from an engine by a universal joint and is mounted in bearings in a fixed sleeve 26 secured in a housing 20, and the impeller is splined to shaft 72. The operating fluid, is supplied from a reservoir to a manifold 62, and' a passages 56 leads from the manifold: to a balancing chamber 52 from which it passes via apertures 88 to the torus 126. The reaction vanes 174, 198 are secured to a carrier 160 mounted in an auxiliary fluid chamber 128 the wall 118 of which is connected to and rotates with the turbine. The chamber 128 is connected by passages 60, 58 to the compartment. 66 of the manifold'62 which leads to the inlet of the reservoir. At a predetermined; speed the flow of fluid in the chamber 126 changes and relative rotary motion between the carrier 160 and a threaded member 34 causess the carrier 160 to move to the right withdrawing the reaction blades and bringing into action vanes 186 which act as overdrive vanes, and the device then acts as a hydraulic coupling as distinct, from a torque converter: The motion of the carrier 160 is limited by dashpot devices. Cooling is effected by hoods 210, 214 supported-by vanes 208, 212 which permit passage: of air. Seals 74, 76, 108, 104 are provided to keep the parts fluid tight, and labryinth seals are provided to keep the parts of the chambers 52, 126, 128 fluid-tight
