Abstract

555,551. Mattresses. CHESTON, A. S., EDMONDS, E. C., CHESTON, B., and COBBER, F. H. June 4, 1942, No. 7592. [Class 52 (iv)] A seat or like flexible surface is tensioned and supported by a number of obliquely-disposed coiled compression springs which may be movable angularly. As shown in Fig. 3, one or both edges of a seat formed of inner and outer flexible surfaces 1, 2 and stuffing 3 is supported by a bar 4 between which and the seat foundation 6 are disposed a number of oblique springs comprising telescopic members 9, 11 surrounded by coiled compression springs 5 the lower end 11a of the members 11 being hemispherical and adapted to seat in a fibre bearing stop 12 secured as shown. In place of one bar 4 for each edge a number of short bars in alignment may be provided. Fig. 5 shows another form of spring comprising springs 17, 21 of different strengths interposed between the bar 4a and a pivoted member 18.
