555,442. Tools and tool-holders : milling-cutters. DAVIS, F. W. Sept. 1, 1941, No. 11166. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXVI] For cutting a gear A, Fig. 10, for a gear pump; having teeth conjugate to a basic rack whose teeth have elliptical flanks, a turning tool is formed by cutting the end of a cylinder 20, Fig. 2, to form a plane elliptical face 22 inclined to the normal at an angle, e.g. 35 degrees, equal to the helix angle of the gear. This tool is used to cut the grooves in a milling-cutter 24, Figs. 12 and 13, constituting a form-cutter for the gear A. The tool 20 may be mounted in a holder 26, Fig. 7, so that the face 22 will be normal to the cutting direction. This cuts the grooves in the cutter 24 whilst the latter, is rotated, the ridges being cut by a complementary tool, Fig. 5, in which a hole equal in diameter to the bar 20 is drilled through a block 30 which is then cut away to leave a little less than half the hole 36, and a cutting face 34 is formed parallel to the axis of the holder. The cutter 24, mounted on a rotating spindle 40, is cut away at 37 to produce a cutting edge 38, Fig. 13, which may be repeatedly sharpened without altering its contour.
