Abstract

554,221. Controlling A.C. by variable reactors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15942. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1941. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Current in a load circuit 4 is controlled by a pair of variable reactors 1, 2 connected respectively in series and in shunt with the load, the two reactors being magnetically opposed and having a core 5 movable from one into the other. Thus when the impedance of the series reactor is increased to a maximum by the presence of the core, the impedance of the shunt reactor is reduced below a nominal minimum (represented by mere absence of the core) due to cancellation of its flux by that produced by the series reactor.
