Abstract

552,153. Motor vehicles. ROVER CO., Ltd., and IVERSEN, P. A. SCOTT-. Aug. 20, 1941, No. 10605. [Class 79 (iii)] In a front-engined vehicle having a streamlined engine cowling or bonnet 16 of which a portion slopes downwardly and rearwardly from its foremost point, the cooling air for the engine passes through an opening 18 in the sloping portion, this opening being at the area of maximum air pressure on the cowling. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 applied to an engine having air-cooled cylinders 15 the air outlet 20 is directly above the air inlet; alternatively the outlet may be at the rear of the cowling. In the construction shown in Fig. 6 the engine is watercooled and the radiator 14 is horizontal. The main portion of the cooling air passes vertically upwards to an outlet 20, and some passes through an opening 25 in a partition 26 to the carburetter 27 and a rear outlet 20a. The opening 25 is controlled by a shutter 29 which may be operated manually or, as shown, by a thermostat 30, so that when the air reaches a predetermined temperature the opening 25 is shut and cool air passes to the carburetter through a passage 33. The radiator may be vertical or inclined instead of horizontal. The bumper 36 may be streamlined as shown at 37 in Fig. 7.
