Abstract

551,758. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Sept. 4, 1941, No. 11313. [Class 112] [Also in Group XXIV] The work is fed by a laterally vibrating needle and continuously rotating upper and lower feed wheels 90, 42. The upper feed wheel 90 is driven through a flexible cable 75, a worm 85, and toothed wheels 86, 88, Fig. 3. The feed wheel and gears 85, 86, 88 are carried in a bracket 83 which is carried by the presserbar and held in place by a spring, and which can be turned out of the way for needle-threading. Both feed wheels receives continuous rotation through change-speed gear boxes 50, 40 respectively. The gears Fig. 6, comprise three wheels 52, 53, 54 on the driving shaft and three wheels 55, 56, 57 loose on a driven stub shaft 58. The latter wheels are selectively coupled to the stub shaft 58 by means of a spring-pressed latch 64 which can be moved axially by means of a knurled head 69. The driving shafts 47, 39 are driven from a vertical shaft 21, one through skew wheels 48 and the other through a worm 27 and wheel 38. The needle vibration is obtained from an adjustable eccentric 18. The loop-taker is driven through bevel gears 26, 29 at the lower end of the shaft 21.
