Abstract

546,140. Sewing-machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. Oct. 10, 1940. No. 15106. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1939. [Class 112] Frames. A feed-off-the-arm machine has an elbowed work-support 3, 4 all in one plane and lines along the general direction of the two parts of the work-support form, in plan, acute angles with the axis of the overhanging arm. The mechanism compartments in the work-support are covered by a single flat elbowed plate. The main shaft, in the overhanging arm, drives through spur gearing a parallel shaft 76 in the base which is connected by bevel gears 83 to a shaft 85 in the work-supporting arm. British Specifications 13783/15 and 353,620, [both in Class 112], and U.S.A. Specifications 104,585 and 999,718 are referred to. Feed by dogs. The feed bar 123 is pivotally supported by a pair of upright links 124 and has sliding connection with a stem 128 of an eccentric strap 129 on the shaft 85. It is given an endwise movement by means of a pitman 132 adjustably secured in a slotted lever 135 which is oscillated by an eccentric strap 138. Loop-stitching devices. The threaded loopers 94 (three are shown) are secured to a shaft 96 which is oscillated by an eccentric strap 105 through a lever 103, link 102 and crank-arm 101. A longitudinal movement is given to the shaft by an eccentric 112' and a link 111 connected to a sleeve 107 mounted between collars 108 fast on the shaft 96. Hinged cover plates 162 give access to the loopers. A rotary take-up 149 acting on all the looper threads is mounted on the end of the shaft 85 outside the mechanism compartment and is protected by a hinged cover plate 148. Presser bars ; threads, controlling otherwise than in stitch-forming. The presser-bar 57 is slidingly mounted in a bracket 46 depending from the overhanging arm and is pressed downwardly by a leaf spring 57. It is raised manually by means of a cord 61 forming a flexible connection with a crank on a shaft in the arm. This shaft has a crank having a plate-like extension by which the three needle-thread tensions are simultaneously released. The thread tensions are located in the cavity of the overhanging arm and this cavity is closed at the top by a removable cover plate. The thread tensions 143 for the looper threads are located within an outer compartment of the work-supporting arm having a removable cover plate 144. Lubricating. The needle-bar driving crank dips into oil in a sump in the needle-bar compartment of the machine head. The base and work-supporting arm have two oil tight compartments : one including the base 5 and reaching to a partition 91 and the other extending from the partition 91 to a partition 97.
