Abstract

551,316. Motor-vehicle reversing-gear. BOYDELL & CO., Ltd., E., COLDWELL, J. D., and SKINNER, J. K. July 14, 1941, No. 8860. [Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A mechanically-propelled tipping truck is provided with a supplementary reversing bevel gear between the engine and the ordinary change-speed gear box. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the reversing gear comprises a planet carrier 31 and planet pinions 32 gearing with sun pinions 25, 30 slidably keyed on the respective driving and driven shafts 23, 27. The reversing gear slides as a unit on the shafts and for a direct drive is moved to the right by a fork 36 so that clutch teeth 35 on the planet carrier engage a toothed member 26 on the shaft 23 and lock the gearing for rotation as a solid body; for a reverse drive the planet carrier is moved to the left so that clutch teeth 37 thereon engage teeth 29 on the gear box housing 28, the planet carrier being then locked to the housing 28 and the shaft 27 driven in the reverse direction to the shaft 23. In a modification the planet carrier rotates in bearings in an extension of the clutch housing and does not slide, reversing being effected by a clutch ring which slides on an extension of the planet carrier and is adapted to lock the latter either to the driving shaft or to the fixed housing.
