[Classes 18 and 94 (i)] A vapour-proof shipping carton has an openmouthed sack of extensible, flexible, impervious material, e.g. rubber, placed against the set-up walls thereof and held in position by a lining placed within, and co-extensive with all portions of, the sack disposed against the set-up walls of the carton. As shown, the carton 16, Fig. 3, with the bottom flaps 17 extending downwards is inserted in an exhaust box 10 and the sack 21 is inserted in the carton with its mouth stretched over the downturned top flaps 18 of the carton. The upper rim of the box has a sealing gasket 13 and the exhaust pipe 15 is connected to a vacuum pump which exhausts the air inside the carton so that the sack 21 is forced into tight contact with the inner faces of the set-up walls of the carton ; the exhaust pipe has a bevelled end extending into the box 10 to prevent the carton and sack from shutting off the flow of air. The liner 26, Fig. 4, is then forced into the carton to retain the sack tightly against the walls of the carton ; the liner is preferably of the same configuration as the carton with the sides and flaps extending therefrom provided with scores 33 so that after the end flaps 31, 32 at one end have been folded inside the liner, the latter may be collapsed into star-form, inserted in the carton and then opened out into expanded form, Fig. 8. The folded flaps of the liner are then opened out to form the bottom of the carton, the exhaust broken in the box 10 and the carton removed therefrom, the followers of the bottom of the sack being then pushed down behind the flaps 17 of the carton which are then closed and taped or sealed. The carton is then packed with goods, the top flaps of the liner are turned down and the stretched mouth 19 of the sack is removed from the flaps 18 of the carton, twisted and engaged with one of the flaps, Fig. 14, which are then all turned down to close the carton; the bag may be exhausted of air before being sealed by twisting.
