Abstract

550,542. Cast iron; furnaces. PHILLIPS, A., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 26, 1941, No. 9514. [Class 72] [Also in Group XII] In the manufacture of cast iron, molten iron from a cupola or reverberatory furnace is allowed to flow over solid steel disposed in a spout leading from the furnace and adapted to retain the steel in the path of the molten iron flowing through the spout into a mould or ladle. The steel is preferably in the form of relatively small pieces of mild steel or silicon steel. The spout 1 comprises a trough part-3, mild steel side walls 4, 5 secured to the trough 3 by bolts 6, and a lip 2. The parts 3, 4, and 5 are lined with bricks 9, covered with ganister &c. lining 10. An inverted trough 7 having a brick lining 11 and a ganister &c. coating 12 is mounted over part of the trough 3 and is secured to the walls 4, 5, by bolts 8. The steel to be added to the molten iron is placed on the bed 10 of the spout 1 and is prevented from passing out in solid form with the molten metal by the restricted opening 13.
