550,247. Flexible shaft-couplings. STEVENS, A. H. (Thompson Products, Inc.). April 25, 1941, No. 5395. [Class 80 (ii)] A resilient drive mechanism includes a double coil spring 54 formed as a helix from a closed loop and having the turns 56 of one coil intermediate the turns 58 of the other, the coils being connected to one another at the ends by integral diametrically extending portions 60, 62. As shown, applied to the rotor driving mechanism of a rotary pump, the spring 54 is housed in a tubular extension 38 of the rotor, and the portions 60. 62, are engaged by a slot 52 in a plug 46 fixed in the extension 38 and by a slot 68 in a driving shank 64 respectively. Radial lugs 74 on the shank 64 fit with clearance between jaws 72 on the extension 38 so that under overload conditions the lugs 74 and jaws 72 make direct driving contact. Relative axial movement between the shank 64 and the extension is limited by a snap ring 80 which loosely engages grooves in the parts 72, 74. The pump at the end adjacent the spring drive is sealed by means described in Specification 550,278, [Group XXVI].
