Abstract
550,094. Automatic volume control. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Oct. 14, 1941, No. 13234. [Class 40 (iv)] A volume-range expander comprises a network 3 which includes a non-linear resistance and in which signals are combined with pulses the duration of which depends on the instantaneous amplitude of the signal envelope or in which a current representing the signal envelope is combined with pulses of a duration depending on the instantaneous amplitude of the signals. It is demonstrated that with a suitably high pulse-frequency, unwanted modulation products can be filtered out as at 24, the effective output consisting of currents of the signal frequency having an amplitude which depends on the law connecting the signal amplitude with the pulse duration. In the arrangement described, the pulse duration is in a linear relationship to the signal amplitude and in consequence the output signal amplitude is proportional to the square of the input signal amplitude. As shown, the pulses are produced by combining envelope waves obtained by rectifying and filtering the signal with saw-tooth, waves generated at 16 in the grid circuit of a valve 18, the pulse voltages appearing across the.anode resistance 23.
