Abstract

548,434. Vehicle wheels. BAKER, F. W. July 8, 1941. No. 8609. [Class 144 (i)] Relates to a vehicle wheel of the kind in which the wheel body is supported from an inner hub portion through a rubber or like resilent ring of L-shape in cross section, the body being pressed in an axial direction towards an abutment for the main side face of the ring, which abutment is fast with the inner hub portion. As shown the wheel disc 13 is detachably secured by studs 16 to an outer hub portion 14 of Z shape between which and an inner hub portion the resilient ring 15 is mounted. The inner hub portion comprises the part 18 secured to the brake drum 24 by studs or bolts 22, 23 and an outer sleeve 19 on which is slidably mounted a washer 29 adapted to press on a rubber annular buffer 28 to force the resilient ring 15 against the abutment formed by the brake drum 24. Lock nuts 30, 31 having threads of opposite hands are provided to bear on the washer 29 and to be locked together by studs 32. The inner hub portion may be formed integrally with the brake drum 24. Heads 34 on the studs 16 may enter recesses 35 in the brake drum if the ring 25 disintegrates to provide a driving connection when the wheel is moved sufficiently axially by the washer 29. Recesses in the resilient ring may be engaged by projections on the brake drum formed by the heads of the bolts or studs 22, 23. Projections and recesses 39 .. 41 may be provided to relieve the bolts 16 of the driving'load or the ring and inner hub may be non-circular. Specification 487,179 is referred to.
