Abstract

548.381. Magnesium; alloys. PYLE. P. R. C. and SHEPPARD, N. C. Nov. 26, 1940, No. 16948. [Class 82 (i)] A process of casting magnesium and its alloys comprises refining the molten metal by means of a first flux, casting- it into ingots, remelting it with a second flux, and casting in moulds. The first flux is made by dissolving magnesium or its alloys or magnesium carbonate in excess of strong hydrochloric acid, adding sufficient saturated solution of an alkali chloride to provide about 20 per cent. of the alkali chloride to the weight of anhydrous magnesium chloride, evaporating to dryness in a vessel having a restricted outlet, igniting to expel free and combined water and adding dry alkali chloride to give a mixture of about egui-molecular proportions of alkali chloride and magnesium chloride. The second flux is made by dissolving magnesium or its alloys or magnesium carbonate in excess of strong hydrochloric acid, evaporating to dryness either in a vessel having a restricted outlet or in the presence of sufficient saturated solution of an alkali chloride to provide 20 per cent. of the alkali chloride to the weight of anhydrous magnesium chloride, and adding alkali chloride and magnesium fluoride to give a mixture of 45 per cent. magnesium chloride, 37 per cent. of alkali chloride, and 18 per cent. of magnesium fluoride. Other materials such as -calcium fluoride or magnesium oxide may be used as equivalents of all or part of the magnesium fluoride.
