Abstract

544,091. Sewing-machines. FAIRWEATHER, W. C. (Singer Manufacturing Co.). Jan. 29, 1941, No. 1165. [Class 112] Feed by dogs. The feed shaft 65. Fig. 2, is actuated through a feed-reversing mechanism which includes a rocker 74, pivoted at 75 and oscillated from a top shaft 16 by a link 79, and a slide 71, mounted on a bar 72 on the rocker and pivotally connected to a pitman 70. In order to move the slide 71 from one end to the other of the bar 72, a hand-operated shaft 88 carries a lever-arm 92 upon which are pivoted two similar links 96, 102 having lost-motion pin- and-slot connections 98 with the pitman 70. The arm 92 is urged to one or other of its extreme positions by means of a spring 106 and a link 104, the line of action of which crosses the centre of the shaft 88 when the slide 71 is moved along the bar 72. This causes the spring 106 to press the effective link 96 or 102 against the pin 98 whilst the other link rides idlv upon it. The links 96, 102 have a length equal to the distance of the slide 71 from the shaft 75 and the parallel motion which is thus provided reduces the vibration which is transmitted back to the handoperated shaft 88. The feed-regulation is effected by a variable throw eccentric 80. The feed motion is transmitted to a feed slide 62. Fig. 4, by an arm 64 on the shaft 65 and the slide has a U-shaped part, similar to the part 44, which embraces a concentric part of the shaft and provides a forward guide for the feed slide. The feed dog 37 is secured by a screw 43 upon a feed plate 41, which is slidingly mounted in the feed slide 62 and carries a U-shaped part 44 embracing a feed-lift eccentric on the shuttledriving shaft 32.
