Abstract

543,436. Valves. COCKBURNS, Ltd., RODGER, J., and GRANT, T. Nov. 25, 1940, No. 16860. [Class 135] An emergency automatic shut-off valve comprises a valve chest 1, a cylindrical liner 11 with lateral ports 13 fitted therein, an axially movable valve 6 guided within the chest 1 and engageable with a seat 8 on the end of the liner, and a piston 10 fixed to the valve 6 and movable within the liner. The chest 1 has inlet and outlet ports 2, 3 respectively. The chamber 14 above the piston 10 is connected through an adjustable needle valve 16 to a point on the outlet side of the valve, and a restricted duct 17 passes through the piston 10. In operation the fluid pressure built up in the chamber 14 is sufficient to resist the upward fluid thrust on the valve and piston. Should an excess fluid pressure drop occur across the valve the fluid pressure in the chamber falls accordingly and the valve closes.
