[Class 40 (v)] High frequency current for electric furnaces &c. is generated by a mercury vapour or like discharge tube with two anodes A, A<SP>1</SP> connected in parallel to a supply source, one of the anode leads including the primary of a transformer T, the secondary of which is connected to the load F and to a coil M for the magnetic control of the discharge. The discharge is thus rapidly switched from one anode to the other. The lead to the second anode A<SP>1</SP> may also include a transformer T<SP>1</SP> from which high frequency current can be drawn. When the supply source is alternating a further discharge tube is oppositely connected across it.
