Abstract

542,990. Carbon disulphide. CARBONISATION ET CHARBONS ACTIFS. Feb. 23, 1940, No. 3427. Convention date. Feb. 24, 1939. [Class 1 (ii)] [Also in Group IV] During processes of rayon manufacture, carbondisulphide, which may be tainted with products such as sulphurous anhydride or sulphuretted hydrogen, is extracted from the coagulation, washing and finishing baths, or from the bobbins of coagulated threads, by drawing a current of air above the baths and bobbins and conducting to wet and dry activated carbon. The thread 1 from the pot 2 enters the xanthate coagulation vessel A and passes through a narrow outlet to the reel B surmounted by a hood 7. Wound reels B', B<SP>2</SP> are supported in the washing and drying vessel C ; a pipe 9 connects the vessels A, C and the hood 7 to the inlet of the fan D which induces a current of air through the apertured lid 3 of the vessel A so that the carbon disulphide is carried on to the fan and passed to the absorber E. The first part of this contains activated carbon highly charged with water to absorb the sulphur compounds, and the second part contains practically dry activated carbon to absorb the carbon disulphide. The flow of gas may be controlled by valves placed at each stage.
