Apparatus for making filaments; cellulose - xanthates, processes for making filaments from.- In the manufacture of viscose silk, transference - of the material from the original collecting spools is avoided by employing a foraminated spool made from a material which resists the action of the desulphurizing-mechanism, and by subjecting the silk while on this spool to the several baths required for the purpose of removing acid, bleaching, desulphurizing, soaping, &c., the baths being caused to flow through the material. Suitable materials for the spools are stainless steel and ceramic materials. As a modification, the silk is partly treated on the original foraminated spool and then transferred to a foraminated twisting spool, the treatment being completed while the silk is on the second spool. By forcing the baths through the silk the duration of the treatment is appreciably shortened. Specification 250,303 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes an arrangement, for use in carrying out the treatment, comprising a spool a of stainless steel covered with a layer b of felt, on which a mass c of silk is spun. The treatments are carried out in a vat d provided with pipe connections f to an exhaust pump, the pipes leading from seatings i; the spools are piled up on the seatings, packing pieces g being placed between their ends, and the exposed end of the uppermost spool being closed by a stopper h. The Specification refers also to the creation of a vacuum within the spool for the purpose of causing the passage of the liquid therethrough. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
