Abstract
542,921. Deoxidizing iron & steel. FOUNDRY SERVICES, Ltd., and WEISS, E. July 24, 1940, No. 112103. [Class 72] Molten iron or steel is deoxidised by adding thereto tablets of uniform size and weight produced by the compacting, e.g. in a tabletting machine, of swarf obtained by the machining off aluminium and aluminium alloys. Prior to compacting the swarf may be cleansed by washing and degreased by heating or by centrifuging or by the use of trichlorethylene. To facilitate the removal of aluminium oxide produced in the de-oxidation a fluoride such as cryolite, sodium or calcium fluoride may be mixed with the swarf before it is compacted, e.g. up to 30 per cent. by weight.
