Abstract
542,254. Steering trailer vehicles. MORRIS, E. H. Aug. 31, 1940, No. 13704. [Class 79 (v)] The front wheels 27 of a trailer vehicle are steered by a divided track rod 14, 15 the inner ends of which are pivoted to a swivelling member 1 pivoted on a vertical pin 2 and pivotally connected at 16 to a drawbar 18, the pin 2 being fixed by a block 5 to the front axle 7 and screwed at its upper end to a transverse frame member of the trailer. The track-rod parts 14, 15 are preferably adjustable in length and are secured at their ends into sockets 28 connected by ball joints 13 to the member 1 and to the steering arms 29 of the wheels. In converting a stripped motor vehicle chassis to a trailer the front springs may be replaced by stays 23 connected to the axle 7 and the chassis side frame members. The lateral movement of the drawbar 18 is limited by chains 24 connected to the drawbar and to lugs 26' on the stays 23 or the axle 7. The drawbar may comprise a metal strip 19 having connecting eyes 20, 17 formed at its front and rear by doubling back the strip, the strip being enclosed by wood reinforcing pieces 22 bolted together.
