Abstract

July 2, 1940, No. 11158 [Class 59] In crushing apparatus employing a falling weight or tup, the tup is made relatively long and slides in a freely suspended guide to avoid shock e.g. in the case of a glancing blow. Fig. 1 shows a tup 1 arranged in a guide formed of facing channel sections 9 connected by braces 11 and by stiffening plate 11a at the bottom, and freely and adjustably suspended by a pair of ropes from a crosshead 7 which may be mounted on a crane jib. The tup is lifted by the engagement of a hook member 13, mounted by a dovetailed slide in its upper end, with a roll carried by a rock plate 18 pivoted to a weight 12 connected to a hoisting rope, and is released when the plate 18 is rocked, by engagement with an abutment 22 on the guide to disengage the roll from the hook 13. Reengagement is effected automatically when the weight 12 is lowered. The tup may be manually released at intermediate lifts by an arm 23 on a counterweighted bell crank 25 when this is rocked by a pull cord and to position the arm 23 so that it rocks the plate 18 as the tup is lifted. Alternatively the weight 12 may be constructed as an electromagnet for lifting the tup, and release may be effected by switches at any desired lift.
