Abstract

541,437. Reinforced concrete. GUERITE, A. T. J. Aug. 13, 1940, No. 12956. [Class 20 (iv)] A reinforcing cable consisting of parallel wire strands 4 surrounded by a sheathing 5 of thin metal is then pre-stressed by a hydraulic jack and, when the concrete has set sufficiently, the ends of the strands are secured by a concrete or metal conical wedge 11 inserted between the ends of the strands 4 forced by the jack into an anchor block 8 to press the strands laterally into a mortar setting between the wedge and the block. The block is reinforced by spiral wires 7c, 8a and is lined with a sheeting 7 having an inner sheeting 7a of thin iron or brass which is coated with graphite grease to facilitate sliding movement between the mortar setting of the wire strands and the block. The strands pass through a guide plate 9 over a bearing ring 10 at the base of the anchor block, and are gripped by the jack which bears against the plate 9. The ends of the strands are secured by wedges around a sliding jacket on the jack which, when pressure fluid is admitted to one part of its cylinder, elongates the strands and when fluid is admitted to another part of the cylinder, forces the conical wedge into the anchor block.
