Abstract

541,334. Pressure-regulating valves. BLAKEBOROUGH, R. A., and BROTHERTON, C. May 4, 1940, No. 8027. [Class 135] A pressure regulating valve actuated by a piston or pistons has the load tending to open the valve automatically and progressively increased as the valve member moves towards its open position. In the form shown in the Figure, the valve spindle is connected by an arm c and links d to the actuating piston which is loaded by dead weights e. Auxiliary loading weights g are carried by an arm f mounted on the spindle a and adapted to move from a vertical to a horizontal position as the valve opens. In a modification the weights e and g are carried by the two arms of a ballcrank lever connected to the actuating piston and valve spindle, In another form a transmitting lever carrying the weights e is coupled by a flexible strap with a pulley connected to a camshaped pulley around which a flexible strap carrying the weights g is adapted to wrap as the valve moves to its open position. In this form the auxiliary load is subtracted from the main load so that its movement is arranged to be a minimum when the valve is fully open. In a further modification the actuating piston is loaded by a dead weight and the transmitting lever carries a mobile weight held between two springs..
