Abstract

539,543. Pyrometers. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and RAMSAY, F. R. F. Jan. 12, 1940, No. 693. [Class 37] A pyrometer for indicating faulty operation in an engine or machine is arranged at a distance from the part the behaviour of which is to be indicated and is in communication with the said part by a heat-conducting liquid so that a warning indication is given when the temperature rises at a rate exceeding a predetermined value. A metal rod A carried by an insulating member B forming part of a cap C is provided with an insulated sleeve E upon which a resistance wire G is wound. Over this is placed another insulating sleeve F upon which a similar resistance wire G is wound, the wires D, G forming parts of an electric bridge as shown in Fig. 3. Wire G being in direct contact with the source of heat will respond more quickly than wire D to a change of temperature and consequently alter its resistance at a different rate to that of wire D. If the value of the difference in rate is large enough a relay Q will be operated and may operate red and green lamps R, S, the green lamp being biassed.
