Abstract
539,025. Arc-rupturing in switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BAKER, W. F. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32753. [Class 38 (v)] The arc formed between the movable and fixed contacts 4, 5 of a contactor is blown by the magnet 3 and cheeks 2 on to runners 6, 7 and thence into a labyrinth at the mouth of the shoot 8. The labyrinth is formed by interleaved projecting fins 11, 12 on opposing parts 9, 10, respectively, which may be of " arcovised Siluminite." Iron plates may be embedded in the fins which, as shown in Fig. 1, taper towards the contacts so that as the arc is driven into the labyrinth, its cross-section is restricted. In Figs. 1 and 2, fins are so shaped that the arc-length is suddenly increased as it assumes a zig-zag shape, but in a modification, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), in which the labyrinth is curved instead of straight, the fins may be shaped to produce a gradual arclengthening. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 541,612.
