538,639. Synthetic rubber. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. May 22, 1939, No. 15223. Convention date, May 23, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Rubber-like substances are made by polymerization of diolefines with or without other polymerizable substances' (such as styrene, acrylic, nitrile and fumaric esters) in aqueous emulsion using as emulsifying agent a watersoluble salt of an anine containing a 'straight alkyl chain of at least eight carbon atoms attached to the anine nitrogen. Raised temperatures may be employed. Examples describe the polymerization of butadiene and styrene, butadiene and acrylic nitrile, and butadiene alone, the emulsifying agents mentioned being dodecylamine hydrochloride and octadecyl dimethylamine hydrochloride. Amine salts of organic acids may also be employed. Specification 330,272, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
