Abstract

538,144. Air-raid shelters. COLLINS F E. April 2, 1940, No. 5940. [Class 20 (i)]. A protective shelter for use in air raids on land or on ships, and of the kind consisting of a bellshaped cell of sheet metal of truncatedcone formation with a rounded top and with a door in the side wall,' has the shell formed of an outer wall 1 and an inner wall 2 spaced therefrom by means of bolts 6 and tubular spacers 11 disposed around the base, and a single sleeve-nut 7 and bolt 10 at the top. Sighting apertures 28 may be provided at the upper portion' of the shell and grip rails 22 attached inside to the wall of the shell. Means 34 may be attached to the outer wall at the base whereby the shelter may be secured to the ground or the deck of a ship. The door 13 is formed with double walls spaced and connected by channel members 16 and is provided with an overlapping edge 19. The inner wall of the shelter may not be continued as far down as the edge of the outer wall. Specifications 518,165, 526.126, 527,646 and 532,663 are referred to.
