Abstract

537,293. Variable-speed gearing. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO. Ltd., and OWNER, F. M. Nov. 14, 1939, No. 30074. [Class 80 (ii)] In an epicyclic variable-speed gear in which the planet carrier is the driving member and the annulus the driven member, the sun wheel may be locked against rotation to produce a high gear or clutched by centrifugal means to the planet carrier so that the gear is solid to produce a low gear. As shown the planet wheels 15 are mounted in a carrier 13 having a gear 11 driven from a gear 10. The sun 16 is formed on a sleeve 17 and is splined to a sleeve 25 carrying clutch plates 26 spaced by a plate 27 splined to a fixed casing 28. The latter carries a piston 29 upon which may act hydraulic pressure admitted into the casing 28 through a port 31 to engage the clutch and hold the sun 16 stationary. A casing 19 mounted on bearings 20, 21, has an internal gear 18 engaging the planets and an internal gear 22 egaging a gear 23 on a driven shaft. The planet carrier 13 has a grooved ring 35 forming the outer member of a centrifugal clutch, the inner members of which are constituted by masses 36 yieldingly secured to the sleeve .17. In operation and when the clutch 26, 27 is engaged a high speed is obtained by the planets planetating round the fixed sun 16 and so driving the casing 19. If the clutch 26, 27 is disengaged the sun 16 will commence to rotate, the masses 36 are thus moved outwardly to engage the ring 35 and the whole of the epicyclic gear becomes solid to produce a low gear. A number of such epicyclic trains may be arranged around a central gear 23 which may be on the shaft of a super-charger of an internal combustion engine.
