Abstract

337,242. Eggenberger, J., Rieder, E.,. and Burkhard, J. Nov. 27, 1929. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing is controlled by braking alternatively loose sun gears 17, 18, 19 by yielding inflatable elements 25, which do not rotate and are not subjected to friction. The elements 25, which are of various forms shown, act by thrusting non-rotary friction annuli 28 against discs 20, 22 secured to the sun gears 17, 18, 19, and against fixed abutment discs 27, 29. Group planet gears 12 - - 15 carried by a driving flywheel 8 mesh with the loose suns 17, 18, 19, and with a sun gear 16 fast on the driven shaft 23, which is connected by a clutch box 23<1> to tail shaft 4. Clutch 33 within box 23<1> for solid driving is operated through a thrust bearing 31 from one of the inflatable members 25. Oil from a pump 36 passes to a selector system with four valve-chests 40 and four valve rods 39 operated singly by a ball selector lever 46. A modification is described in which selection is effected by a single sliding multiple valve.
