Abstract
536,654. Valves. TOWLER, J. M., and TOWLER, F. H. Dec. 12, 1939, No. 32030. [Class 135] A pressureregulating valve is constructed of a valve body 1 bored to receive a spring- controlled plunger 2 formed with one or more axial bores 6 provided with radial ports which can connect with inlet ports 3 and outlets 4. In its simplest form an adjustable spring normally presses the plunger 2 against stops 16 Fig. 1, arranged in a space 9 in the valve body above the plunger 2, but when the pressure in space 9 rises to a pre-determined value the plunger 2 is depressed and the supply of liquid is cut off thus reducing the outlet pressure. In a modification, Fig. 4, the space 9 is arranged below the plunger 2 and the inlet supply is cut off by the spring 7 when the outlet pressure rises too high. Normally the fluid passes from the inlet 3 to a groove 11 in the plunger which is formed with radial ports 5 connecting by an axial bore 6 and other radial ports 5 to a second groove 11 communi- cating with the outlet 4. When the plunger is depressed by the spring 7 the valve is closed by a double cut-off. A reducing valve as in Fig. 1 may also be formed with a double cut-off, or with four cut-offs in which case the plunger is formed with four grooves 11 and two independent axial bores 6, and the valve body is formed with an annular groove capable of joining the two pairs of grooves 11.
