[Class 135] A rotary valve for controlling the supply and exhaust of pressure fluid to the two ends of one or more double-acting hydraulic cylinders has the valve ports so arranged that in an intermediate position the two ends of the hydraulic cylinders are directly connected and the main inlet and exhaust conduits are also directly connected. Fig. 1 shows the valve applied to the control of a pair hinged vane power devices for actuating a pair of gates. The valve member 1 has a central cavity 5 connected to the exhaust conduit 17 and provided with four radial ports 4. The valve casing has pairs of diametrically opposed ports 6, 7 and 8, 9 connected to the two hydraulic devices and diametrically opposed chambers 12 connected by pipes 14 to the outlet of a pump 15 and by radial ports 13 with the valve surface. These ports are provided with throttling screws 19. In the position shown the pairs of ports 6, 7 and 8, 9 are connected by peripheral recesses 2, 3 in the valve member and the pipes 14 are connected to the return conduit 17 by way of chambers 12, passages 13, 4 and cavity 5. On turning the plug through 36 degrees the conduits 7 and 8 are connected by the recesses 2, 3 to the pressure supply and the conduits 6, 9 are connected to the return pipe by passages 4 and cavity 5. Turning the valve member through a further 108 degrees reverses these connections. In a modification, the valve member is in the form of a disc having two recesses and four through ports adapted to co-operate with four axial and radial passages leading to the power devices and with four other passages leading to an annular chamber connected to the pressure supply. The valve may be actuated by hand but it is preferably actuated by an electric motor controlled by suitable electrical equipment such as relays, switches and the like under the influence of distant control elements, such as a push button key operated switch, road contact pad or the like.
