534,895. Magnetic separators. NEILL & CO. (SHEFFIELD), Ltd.. J., and BOWER, W. L. Aug. 18, 1939, No. 23854. [Class 72] In magnetic separators of the kind in which the magnetic structure is in the form of a cylinder or sector of a cylinder which is enclosed in a drum which is rotated or in the form of a cylinder which is rotated, the magnetic structure comprises a plurality of units assembled in axial juxtaposition to form a structure having the shape of a cylinder or sector of cylinder, each unit carrying a plurality of permanent magnets, which may be U-shaped or channel section, of high coercive force having polar faces which bear against facing elements of high magnetic permeability arranged in contacting juxta-position in spaced rows extending circumferentially or axially of said structure. In one form, Fig. 1, U-shaped magnets 2 are supported in a non-magnetic frame comprising a boss 3 keyed to an axle 1, an inner polygonal rim 4 connected to the boss 3 by a web 5, and webs 6 projecting radially from the rim 4, the magnets being secured to the rim 4 by bolts 10. The faces of the polar portion 7 of the magnets 2 bear against rings 8 of magnetic material and are held in position by portions 9 of non-magnetic material, the outer rings 8 projecting beyond the magnets 2 and are engaged by end plates 11 secured on the shaft 1 by set screws 12. In a modification, Fig. 4, the flat rectangular magnets 2 are arranged as before on a polygonal rim, are provided with facing pieces 18 of magnetic material secured by bolts 19, and are of alternate polarity arranged inside a drum conveyer.
