Abstract

533,690. Mercury switches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1939, No. 30110. Convention date. Nov. 19, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] A device adapted to provide continuous interruption for a low voltage D.C. circuit comprises an electrode 6 of relatively high resistivity such as carbon arranged in a glass vessel 4 with a small hole 8 at the bottom where the carbon extends into contact with mercury 10 in a surrounding vessel; current passing through the carbon and mercury in series causes momentary volatilization of the mercury at the neck 8 and consequent interruption of the circuit, whereupon the vapour recondenses and the circuit is remade. The arrangement shown functions whatever the position of the vessels. In a modification, a pool of mercury is arranged over the carbon for the electrode 14 to dip into.
