Abstract

533,644. Fluid-pressure servomotor systems. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Aug. 17, 1939, No. 23717. Convention date, June 7. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXVII] In internal-combustion engines having two crank shafts with separate banks of cylinders to the two shafts, and at least one supercharger to each bank of cylinders, fuel-control apparatus is arranged to be acted upon by a speed governor and also by a pressure-responsive device arranged to be subject to that supercharging-pressure of the two which at any moment is the lower. Fig. 4 shows the fuel pumps 8 and 8<SP>1</SP> of the two banks of cylinders controlled by arms 34, 34<SP>1</SP> on rods 30, 30<SP>1</SP>, which are connected together by arms 32, 32<SP>1</SP> and a lever 33, and are further connected to a speed governor 50 through a resilient device 51, and to servomotors 11, 11<SP>1</SP> subjected respectively to the pressures delivered by the two super-chargers. These pressures are admitted by pipes 31, 31<SP>1</SP> to the spaces above diaphragms 12 connected to the valves 14 of servomotor pistons 16 which carry stops 18, 181 limiting the amount by which the fuel supply may be increased. Thus the stop 18 or 18<SP>1</SP> corresponding to the super-charging-pressure which is the lower brings about a corresponding reduction in the fuel supply, by acting on an arm 22 or 22<SP>1</SP> on the rod 30<SP>1</SP>. The governor 50 also controls a servomotor 27 adjusting a resistance 24 in circuit with a generator 25 driven by the engine, so as to keep the load on the engine constant. In modifications, the two diaphragms 12 may be arranged in the same casing and connected to a common servomotor; or the two super-charging- pressures may act on opposite sides of the same diaphragm. In another form, having four super-chargers each supplying half of the cylinders of a bank, four diaphragms subjected to the four pressures respectively are arranged to act directly on the fuel-pump controls, the controls of opposed half-banks being connected together.
