Abstract
532,734. Scaffolding; scenic railways. BURTON, J. Aug 2, 1939, No. 22360. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] A scaffold, trestle bridge, or like structure particularly for use in supporting the rails of scenic railways, comprises a built-up metallic tubular supporting structure and horizontal load supporting-members and formed in pairs, one member of each pair arranged on each side of the upright and caused to grip it, and friction clamps and fittings for transmitting the load to the uprights. Each fitting consists of a bearing plate 22 adapted to support the ends of a divided bearer beam 15, one part disposed on either side of an extension 33 of an upright 10, and clamped together to grip the extension by bolts 24, which do not pass through the extension. The fitting is frictionally supported on the upright by a sleeve clamp 16 and a spacing sleeve 23 is placed between the fitting and the clamp to allow for the unevenness caused by the hinge pin of the clamp which engages a recess 36 in the spacing sleeve. In a modification the fitting is formed as a U-shaped sleeve to embrace the end of the bearer beam, and in a further modification, eye bolts from the fitting engage over the ends of the cross bolts which bolt the ends of the bearer beam together. The uprights 10 of the structure are connected by diagonals 11, Fig. 1, and side supports 28, 29 may be carried by the bearer beams to take the lateral thrust of the carriage.
