[Class 83 (iv)] A plate shearing device consists of a reciprocated upper cutter 10 co-operating with two cutters 1, 1', having parallel cutting edges 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, the cutters 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, being pivotally mounted in a holder 3 at opposite sides of the path of movement of the cutter 10 and rocked by pressure of the work during cutting towards each other into engagement with fixed abutments 8 so that in the inner position of the cutters the space between their cutting edges corresponds approximately to the width of the cutter 10. The operative end 11 of the cutter 10, which is tapered in cross section with the thinner end 13 at the beginning of the cut, extends obliquely so that it engages the work first with the portion 13 so as to punch out a strip 15 successively, the widest portion of the cutter forming lines of weakness which are cut during the next working stroke. The cutters 1, 1<SP>1</SP> which are rhombic in cross-section, are mounted in recesses 2, 2<SP>1</SP> in the holder, closed at the sides by plates 4, 4', and pivoted about the edges 7, 7'. The pivotal mounting of the cutters 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, allows them to be swung outwards during return movement of the cutter so as to prevent jamming of the strip 15. Arcuate cuts of small radius may thus be effected.
