Abstract

532,167. Friction clutches. ROSEN, O. E. July 17, 1939, No. 20746. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII In a copying machine such as a milling- machine, lathe &c. a driving shaft 70, Fig. 6, rotates a feed shaft 70a through a clutch comprising a cylindrical spring coil 92 attached at 99 to a flange 86 on the shaft 70 and at 101 to a sleeve 100 surrounding the coil. The coil is normally free from an inner sleeve 91 attached to the shaft 70a, but when its rotation with the shaft 70 is restrained it contracts and grips the sleeve 91 to drive the shaft 70a. This restraint is imposed by the friction of an outer sleeve 105 normally rotating with the shaft 70 but which may be held stationary by a belt 80 engaging a pulley 81 thereon. One end of the belt is attached to a stationary bracket 71 and the other end to an armature 78 passing through solenoids 74. 75. The solenoids are connected to the contacts 45, 46 so that they will be energized when the contact 35 engages either of them. A spring 76, normally raises the armature to apply the brake to the sleeve 05 and cause the shaft 70a to be driven but when the contact 35 engages either of the contacts 45, 46 for more than a brief time, thus causing a considerable " in " or " out " feed of the cutter, one of the solenoids 74, 75 will be energized to pull the armature downwards against the spring and release the brake, whereupon the clutch will be disengaged and the feed traverse will be stopped until the " in " or " out continuous feed has ceased. Repeated intermittent engagements of contact 35 with contacts 45, or 46 will cause slipping of the clutch and so slow down the traverse. A modified construction of clutch for use in a lathe, but having the same features as that shown in Fig. 6, is described.
