Abstract

531,794. Thermal switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 2, 1939, No. 22404. Convention date, Aug. 27, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XIII] A bi-metallic actuating member is formed with two arcuate slots 30 defining a central strip 40 and two side strips 42. A circular hole 32 is formed midway between the ends of the slots, extending into the central strip, so that a support extending through the hole co-operates directly with the central strip as distinguished from the side strips. The member is then bowed and heat-treated so that the strip 40 is bowed downwardly more than the strips 42, the highexpansive side being upward. A snap action is thus obtained. The rivet 16 comprises a shank 38 which is passed through the hole 32 and spun over, and a shank 36 which is passed through the support 12 and spun over. The free end of the member carries an electric contact which co-operates with an insulated contact 20, carried by a plug 22 which is adjusted to vary the temperature at which the contacts open. In an alternative the bi-metallic member may be formed as in Fig. 6.
