531,733. Cellular products. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Berry & Co., Inc., F. E.). July 31, 1939, No. 22184. [Class 70] Cellular products for heat and sound insulation purposes are made from a mixture of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate and a granular filler, the alkalinity of the solution being controlled in the ratio of not more than three parts SiO 2 to one part of the alkali oxide in order to regulate the cell size. The mixture is beaten in the presence of a foaming agent, dried at a gradually increasing temperature and then further heated. An example is given of the use of limestone, sodium silicate, powdered glass, frothing agent and water. The alkalinity may be adjusted by adding an alkali hydroxide. To increase the resistance of the product the cellular product, either before or after heating, may be treated with a weak acid, acid gas or acid salt, or by incorporating in the mix before heating, sulphur, metal oxides, metal salts or neutral glasses which will co-alesce or unite with the binder or by coating the surface with waterrepellants such as metal soaps, drying oils or waxes, or by treating with a solution of calcium chloride, aluminium or zinc sulphate, or chloride, and drying in an atmosphere containing carbon dioxide.
