Abstract

Electrically insulating coatings are formed on magnetic sheet material containing iron by applying an aqueous solution of 0.5-10 per cent. by weight of aluminium hydrate and 5-50 per cent. of 85 per cent. phosphoric acid, the solution having a pH less than 0.8 and the ratio of phosphoric acid to aluminium hydrate being at least 4.5 : 1, and heating the sheet material and applied solution to 135 DEG -500 DEG C. to drive off water and react the ingredients to form an insulating coating. The solution may also contain a wetting agent such as an alcohol sulphate, alkyl aryl sulphonate or alkyl sulphonate. The solution may be applied by spraying dipping or flow coating.
