Abstract

530,564. Riveting aircraft; punching. AMIOT, F. June 27, 1939, No. 18748. Convention date, July 26, 1938. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In a machine for riveting aircraft parts &c. one set of tools makes holes in the work and another upsets the rivets between intermittent advances of the tools across the work, the two sets of tools being separated by a distance determined by the pitch of the rivets, and operating simultaneously. The work 1 rests on a support 14 having holes for passage of the upwardly acting tools and spring pressed rollers 16 to engage the stiffeners 2. The machine is controlled by cams, driven by an electric motor through a clutch, which operate switches in the circuits of electromagnets, such as 53<SP>2</SP> and 53<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 6, which in turn operate valves such as 62<SP>2</SP> and 61<SP>1</SP>, controlling the admission of compressed air to and exhaust from cylinders 81, 81a. Fig. 9, pistons of which advance the bolster 4 and hold-up 6 through toggles 77, or cylinders, such as 55, Fig. 6, the pistons 57 of which force oil from cylinders as 59 into cylinders 67, 167, and 88. Fig. 9, to move the sheet clamp 3a down on to the work, to force the punch 3 through the work. and to force the die 5 against a rivet and a spring pressed sheet clamp 84 against the work respectively. The tools 4, 6 are then returned by springs 82, the tools 3, 5, and 84 by oil pressure on the reverse sides of the pistons 71, 87 and the clamp 3a by a key 73 of the punch holder 70 engaging a groove in its holder 68. Another cam then acts, through a similar relay system, to admit pressure fluid through a fixed piston rod, 138, Fig. 2, into a cylinder 38, having a rack 27, Fig. 2a, on one side in engagement with a pinion 28 which is thereby rotated and, acting through a one-way device 26, shaft 25 and gears 24, 23 rotates a worm 20 engaging a fixed rack 21 to traverse the carriage 7, with all the tools, through a distance equal to the pitch required along rails 8, 9. The shaft 25 is then locked by a spring-pressed detent 31 while the cyinder 38 is returned, a cam 37 on the cylinder 38 engaging a lever 34 to withdraw the detent at the end of the return stroke. Rivets are fed to the holes punched in the work by hand or by a device A, Fig. 9, as described in Specification 530,563, operated by compressed air supplied in a similar manner under control of one of the cams. In a modification the machine is controlled by hand so that the tools operate on the work and then, by another hand movement, the carriage advances and a device is provided to prevent either action from being initiated until the preceding operation has been completed. A curved support 105, Fig. 1, may be provided for curved work.
