[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Metal sheet feeds.-Flat, cut to length and width, steel sheets are produced from continuous stock having untrimmed edges but being of substantially uniform width by passing the stock through a straightening device and through guides to a stop. The strip is sheared transversely and the cut off portion is forwarded through guides to side trimming cutters whence the finished sheet is delivered tc a stacker. A coil 32 is raised from a pit to rails 35 and passes thence to rolls 42 that support it during uncoiling. The free end passes over a roller 45 through feed rolls 3E and a straightener 46 and over a ramp 52 that facilitates the formation of a loop 140 when the forward end of the sheet is arrested during cutting off by shears 56. Auxiliary feed rolls 54 are brought into operation when the end of the strip leaves the rolls 36. Chain conveyers 22, 24 carry the sheet along between an adjustably fixed guide 14 and a movable guide 16 operated by linkage actuated by a solenoid-controlled fluid pressure cylinder 96 to clamp the sheet between the guides during severance. An adjustable spring effects the return. The solenoid is actuated by the sheet passing under a flag switch 60, Fig. 9, which also starts the motor driving the shears 56 and controls a half-revolution motor operating the stop 62, through crank and connecting rod 120. The switch and stop are mounted on a longitudinally adjustable carriage 1'24. The side guides are formed with hold-down members that prevent the sheet from buckling on contact with the stop 62. Scrap cutters deliver waste to a bin 152. Caterpillar conveyers 146, 148 deliver the severed lengths through trimming cutters 145 and onto a roller table 218 provided with adjustable side guides. Feed rolls 160 deliver to an inclined piling table where they rest on rails being aligned by side guides and an end stop 200. The piling table is pivoted at 204 and may be raised by pneumatic means 212 to a horizontal position to facilitate removal of the piled sheets. The roller table 28 is pivoted at 162 to permit removal of the scrap bin.
