Abstract

527,510. Leather-working machines. TANNING PROCESS CO. April 6, 1939, No. 10713. Convention date, April 7, 1938. [Class 76] A staking machine comprises a plurality of blades operating on a skin and a uniformly yielding resilient worksupporting brush into which the skin is pressed by the blades so that it is bent sharply back over them. In the illustrated embodiment the work support is a freely rotating brush roll 10, and the blades 12 are mounted on a powerdriven cylinder 14, being disposed in double helical form as shown in Fig. 3 so that they exert a stretching action on the skin. Between the blades and parallel to them are ribs of felt 16 presenting a broad surface at a level lower than the edges of the blades; these also exert a stretching and smoothing action. The bearings of the roller 10 are carried by parallel arms 18 pivoted on a shaft 20, and power-driven means (not shown) are provided for swinging it from the receiving position (shown in dotted lines) to the operative position and vice versa. The skin 11 is placed over the roller in the former position, the roller is then moved to the operative position, and the operator withdraws the skin against the action of the blades by pulling on the part 24. A power-driven roller 22 assists this withdrawal. A conduit 90 connected with a suction plant is provided for removing dust. Specifications 1061/97 and 253,824, [both in Class 76], are referred to.
